Deeper restart with brake applied? Tesla manual dispels common myth

The Tesla manual used to suggest that for a more thorough restart, you should press the brake pedal along with specific buttons. However, the updated Tesla manuals now make it clear that pressing the brake is unnecessary during a restart.

This change emerged from updated manuals found online, and it was noticed by the Twitter account @NotATeslaApp. The new instructions state that you should only restart the touchscreen when the car is stationary and in park mode, without needing to press the brake pedal.

This update caused discussions on Twitter because some Tesla employees and guides had previously recommended pressing the brake pedal during a restart if a regular restart using just the steering wheel buttons didn’t solve the problem. This brake pedal action was thought to perform a “hard reset” for more severe computer issues.

Now, it seems that these recommendations may need to change, as the updated manual does not specify that they only apply to newer Tesla models. Some Tesla owners have insisted on Twitter that only using the brake pedal helped improve their situation. Nevertheless, Tesla’s manual now explicitly states that pressing the brake is unnecessary during a restart.

If you ever need to completely turn off your Tesla, you can do it through the touchscreen menu under “Security.” Wait for two minutes without touching anything, then either press the brake pedal or open a door to turn the car back on. This should hopefully resolve any issues.
