Nio, the renowned electric vehicle manufacturer listed on the NYSE, has just unveiled its latest model, the EC6. This launch completes the transition of all Nio models from the older NT 1.0 platform to the cutting-edge NT 2.0 platform. However, it’s worth noting that the new EC6 comes with a starting price of RMB 358,000 ($49,200), which is RMB 20,000 ($2,750) higher than the starting price of the recently launched ES6.

What makes the launch of the EC6 particularly interesting is the innovative presentation format. Nio chose to showcase the vehicle as if one of their own staff members were presenting it to a family customer. The founder, chairman, and CEO of Nio, William Li, took a backseat during the presentation, indicating that the EC6 caters to a more personalized niche market compared to the ES6.

In terms of specifications, the new EC6 boasts dimensions of 4,849 mm in length, 1,995 mm in width, and 1,697 mm in height, with a wheelbase measuring 2,915 mm. Like other NT 2.0-based models, it features a LiDAR and camera setup on the roof, and its front and taillight design aligns with the latest models in Nio’s lineup.

Under the hood, the EC6 is powered by dual electric motors manufactured by Nio’s electric drive systems division in Hefei, Anhui province. These motors offer impressive power, with maximum outputs of 150 kW and 210 kW, respectively, allowing the EC6 to reach a top speed of 200 km/h. These powertrain specifications closely match those of the new ES6, ET5, and ET5 Touring models. For customers looking for even more power, Nio offers the ES8, ES7, and EC7 models, equipped with front motors peaking at 180 kW and rear motors at 300 kW.

The pricing options for the EC6 are diverse. The base model with a 75-kWh standard range battery pack starts at RMB 358,000, while the variant with a 100-kWh long-range battery pack begins at RMB 416,000. For those who prefer the Battery as a Service (BaaS) model, the starting price is RMB 288,000, with monthly rental fees of RMB 980 and RMB 1,680 for the 75-kWh and 100-kWh battery packs, respectively.

One key differentiator between the EC6 and ES6 is the inclusion of comfort features like the “Queen’s seat” as standard in the EC6, whereas these were optional in the ES6.

Nio has made significant strides in accelerating its product development cycle this year. Deliveries of the new EC6 began ahead of schedule, starting on September 15, 2023, a day earlier than previously announced. Show cars of the EC6 were already available at Nio stores earlier in the week.

This release expands Nio’s lineup to a total of eight products, ensuring a wider range of options to cater to the diverse preferences of customers in the premium segment. Nio’s management, in an analyst call following its second-quarter earnings announcement on August 29, expressed confidence that these new offerings would drive steady growth in overall deliveries.

While the new EC6 is exciting, the ES6 SUV remains Nio’s flagship model, aligning well with the preferences of Chinese consumers. The ES6 has been a standout performer, with 11,118 units delivered in July and 8,601 units in August.

In summary, the introduction of the new Nio EC6 adds a compelling option to the company’s electric vehicle lineup. Despite a slightly higher starting price than the ES6, the EC6 offers a unique combination of features and performance, catering to a niche market seeking a personalized driving experience. With its ongoing commitment to innovation and product development, Nio continues to position itself as a prominent player in the electric vehicle industry.
