River’s Indie Electric Scooter Revs Up the EV Landscape: A Blend of Practicality and Power
River Debuts Indie Electric Scooter as Initial Unit Leaves Hoskote Facility
River, an electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer based in Bengaluru, has introduced its maiden electric scooter named “Indie.” Production of this innovative e-scooter has now commenced at the River plant located in Hoskote, Karnataka. Marketed as the SUV among e-scooters, Indie is poised to make a significant impact in the EV sector.
Following recent updates to the FAME II Subsidy regulations, the pricing structure for the Indie will undergo revisions. River is in the process of announcing the adjusted pricing and is committed to honoring the originally promised ex-showroom price of Rs. 1,25,000 for pre-order customers in Bengaluru.
Aravind Mani, the driving force behind River, has disclosed that deliveries of the first batch of Indie e-scooters to pre-order customers in Bengaluru will commence in September 2023. Deliveries to customers in other cities across the country will follow in a phased manner at a later date. Notably, customers beyond the pre-order stage will experience a price increase due to reduced subsidies. River is also actively working on establishing its inaugural experience center in Bengaluru, slated to become operational in November of this year. In the interim, pre-order customers can log into their River accounts to schedule a test ride of the Indie e-scooter, available in three appealing colors: Spring Yellow, Summer Red, and Monsoon Blue.
The unveiling of the first River Indie e-scooter provides a glimpse into the brand’s cutting-edge manufacturing facility. Spanning an impressive 120,000 square feet, this advanced facility is equipped to produce up to 100,000 units annually. The plant features automated assembly lines catering to both battery pack and vehicle assembly.

The Indie e-scooter embodies practicality and versatility, reminiscent of the traits associated with SUVs. It features a range of attributes akin to adventure bikes, including crash guards, lock-and-load panniers with a capacity of up to 40L, and provisions for a top-box with a capacity of up to 25L. The design also incorporates front-set footpegs to maximize floorboard usage. The vehicle offers ample storage options, including a generous 43L under-seat compartment complete with a USB port and illumination. Additionally, River has thoughtfully included 12L storage in the front apron, accompanied by a USB charging port on the handlebar, featuring a 6” color instrument screen. The Indie is powered by a 4 kWh battery promising a practical range of 120 km. Its mid-mounted motor generates 6.7 kW (9 bhp) and 26 Nm of torque, resulting in performance metrics such as a 0-40 km/h acceleration in 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 90 km/h. While the ground clearance of 165 mm isn’t equivalent to an SUV, the inclusion of tall 14” alloy wheels compensates for it. Further features encompass 240mm front and 200mm rear disc brakes with CBS, rear twin shock absorbers, and front RSU telescopic forks, among others.
