The idea behind the Elespa EV is to convert the existing scooters/ mopes and motorcycles into hybrid vehicles, this conversion kit enables it to run in electric modes as well as petrol modes. As petrol price is gradually raising, it is impossible for the customer to fill petrol overcome this Elespa EV introduce its hybrid conversion kit, which helps customers to convert their existing scooter into an electric scooter.

Today we are talking about the Pune-based startup Elespa EV, this startup builds India’s first conversion kit for an ICE petrol scooter, this kit converts any scooter into a hybrid scooter, a hybrid vehicle is a combination of both electric+petrol, but this startup offers three modes, electric modes, petrol modes and boost modes which is a combination of electric + petrol(ICE) designed for quicker acceleration and for overtaking.

At the moment, Elespa (a portmanteau of ‘electric’ and ‘spark’, like an ICE engine’s spark plug) has mounted the kit onto a stock TVS Jupiter 110. And here we lay out all the details around the hybrid scooter.

Elespa EV uses a BLDC hub motor mounted on the 10-inch of the rear wheel, which generates 1.44KW of nominal power and 3.5Kw of peak power, this motor is designed in-house from CNC machined components.

Elespa said that the motor is IP67-certified waterproof, and dustproof and can able to survive in any weather condition also it can have a heat resistance of up to 80% Celsius along with a casing featuring fins for improved heat dissipation.

As this experiment is done with TVS Jupiter 110, the Jupiter scooter has 33 litres of boot space where the battery is fitted with an MSB switch to enable electric mode. this battery can removable you can remove it and charge it anywhere, the brand claimed a solo rider scooter offers a 60kmph top speed and 55kmph top speed for dual riders.

The brand added an extra button mounted on the apron of the scooter to enable pure electric mode. if you want electric mode you need to switch on buttons and to enable petrol mode you need to switch off the button (indicator in blue backlight), and brand included another mode called ‘boost mode’ (switch on via the scooter ignition switch, on the fly) convert scooter into hybrid enable the motor to work in conjunction with petrol engine design to offer quicker acceleration and for overtaking.

The brand uses a 1.5Kwh lithium-ion Ferro phosphate battery, this battery is fitted either under the seat or front floorboard, brand also said that this Ferro phosphate battery is more reliable than a lithium-ion battery and offers better efficiency.

The battery required 4 hours to get charged from 0-100% offering 80km on a single charge, Elespa currently working on a charging platform which can use in your parking areas, through which the battery can wirelessly charge.

What challenges faces Elespa EV?

Elsepa chief notices elespa is resisting the bump in weight, to remove this brand plan to install the battery on a front floorboard mentioned earlier, while the battery weight is 16kg and the motor weight is 8kg, the kerb weight of the scooter is 135kg, elespa also working on reducing the motor weight, also do some alternation with rear suspension setup, also plan to add extra torque from the rear wheel.
