UAW boss says workers shouldn’t accept lower wages so ‘greedy people like Elon Musk can build more rocket ships’

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and a lifelong foe of organised labour, was the target of scathing criticism from the head of the auto workers union.

On X @sawymerritt posted that UAW boss says workers shouldn’t accept lower wages so ‘greedy people like Elon Musk can build more rocket ships’.

According to United Auto Workers president Shawn Fain, employees at businesses like Tesla “are scraping to get by so that greedy CEOs and greedy people like Elon Musk can build more rocket ships.”

The “Big Three” automakers—Ford Motor, General Motors, and Stellantis—have cautioned that the union’s demands will exacerbate the already-existing cost difference with other automakers with non-unionized workforces in statements clarifying their positions.

Ford stated on Thursday that complying with the UAW’s demands will increase its labour costs, which are already “significantly higher than the labour costs of Tesla, Toyota, and other foreign-owned automakers in the United States.”

Ford said on Thursday that complying with the UAW’s demands will increase its labour costs, which are now “significantly higher than the labour costs of Tesla, Toyota, and other foreign-owned automakers in the United States that utilise non-union-represented labour.”

Fain stated on CBS that labour expenditures made up just 5% of the price of a car in response to these worries. “[Automakers] could double our wages and not raise the price of the vehicles and still make billions in profits,” he said. The union president referred to Tesla and other businesses’ pay as “pitiful.”

The UAW is addressing wage disparities between Tesla and its employees in the Detroit area, highlighting the need for fair compensation for all workers, including non-unionized ones.
